The proliferation of digital music and the ubiquity of the Internet have created a very lucky marriage for jazz lovers. The Web is roaring with jazz listings, blogs, and music downloads. Here's a short list of some of our favorite sites.
In many ways the granddaddy of Web-based music sites, AllMusic.com is a comprehensive database of biographies, discographies, and music maps that will send music lovers down a gleeful rabbit hole of musicology. |
The newest member of the SFJAZZ Collective, trumpeter Dave Douglas, maintains a blog on his label's Web site. In fact, he's got an interesting post up right now about his work with the Collective on the forthcoming Monk Project. |
America's music receives a fitting tribute from America's museum on Smithsonian Jazz. The site features the intriguing "This Day in Jazz History" feature, as well as comprehensive sections on legends like Armstrong and Ellington. |
Across the pond, the BBC maintains an excellent jazz site, featuring streaming programming, reviews, a jazz blog, and in-depth interviews and features for legendary jazz artists. |
Spring Season Sponsor, JazzTimes' site offers a good chunk of the excellent content, including an archive of CD and concert reviews and a rotating selection of mp3 downloads—all for free. |
For those who want more interaction in a Web site, JazzCorner hosts a message board they call the Speakeasy where jazz fans can haggle over reviews, top 10 lists, and the lineups of upcoming jazz festivals. |
Destination: Out was featured in a recent New York Times feature on the blogosphere's role in drawing attention to late-twentieth-century jazz. They post a steady diet of mp3s from out of print records. Also mentioned in the NYT article is Ethan Iverson (of piano trio The Bad Plus) and his intriguing blog, entitled Do The Math, and Ear of the Behearer, an archive of jazz recorded between 1970 and 1989. |
Bay Area-based jazz writer Forrest Dylan Bryant's blog, FOJAZZ, features his latest album reviews and thoughts on the jazz world. |
Local jazz radio station KCSM maintains an up-to-date “Jazz Datebook”. They also stream some of the best jazz on the Internet. |
M-Base creator Steve Coleman has made the lion's share of his discography available for free download. His philosopy for doing so is available here. |
Of course, the beauty of the Web is that new information is constantly being updated, so check the blogrolls on these sites to keep up to date. And be sure to let us know some of your favorite blogs at suggestions@sfjazz.org.

| SFJAZZ's new associate director of education, Cory Combs, will teach the Discover Jazz course this spring. |
Though the web is an exceedingly convenient resource, nothing replaces interacting with jazz—and fellow jazz fans—in person. That's the idea behind our Discover Jazz course, a semi-annual series of evening classes presented in association with the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco.
Each Discover Jazz class is an enlightening mixture of music, video, and insightful discussions with guest artists and educators, taught by SFJAZZ's new associate director of education, Cory Combs—a distinguished jazz musician in his own right. Combs' latest album, Valencia , was named "one of 2006's finest slices of modern jazz" by All About Jazz.
