2006 was a phenomenal year for the SFJAZZ Collective, highlighted by a DownBeat poll-topping position as “#1 Rising Star Jazz Band.” The auspicious notices continued this holiday season with a rave Christmas Day review of the Collective’s latest CD release, Live 2006: 3rd Annual Concert Tour, in The New York Times.
“Modernity is the mantra of the SFJAZZ Collective,” Times critic Nate Chinen aptly noted of this limited-edition, double-disc celebration of “modern man par excellence” Herbie Hancock’s music and the Collective’s own original compositions. Chinen writes that the Collective’s innovative repertoire “attests to the durability of Mr. Hancock’s work and to the interpretive powers of Mr. Redman’s coterie. Make no mistake, those powers are considerable: the standard of musicianship here, in terms of solo firepower, could hardly be higher.”
In other exciting news, the Collective’s Nonesuch release, SFJAZZ Collective 2 , made Washington Post writer Geoffrey Himes’ top 10 albums of the year, and the band reached fourth position in the Best Jazz Band category of DownBeat’s Annual Readers Poll. The all-star octet enters its ‘07 season by welcoming 2006 DownBeat “Trumpeter of the Year” (in both the critics and readers polls) Dave Douglas to the fold and tackling the music of jazz icon Thelonious
Monk.
Tickets to the 8th Annual Spring Season go on sale this Sunday, January 7, to the general public. Anchored by the Monk Project, a series of concerts and educational events paying tribute to the legacy of jazz titan Thelonious Monk, the spring also features appearances by legends Dave Brubeck, Etta James, McCoy Tyner, and the global grooves of Carlinhos
Brown, Angelique Kidjo, and Anoushka Shankar.
The SFJAZZ Box Office, located 3 Embarcadero Center, Lobby Level, will be open special hours this Sunday only from 10AM-6PM. Validated parking is available on weekends. Great seats are still available to every show, but they’ll go fast so get spring off to an early start and buy yours this weekend!

Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but it seems the sun is hanging around a little bit longer each day. That means spring is just around the bend, and with it comes the kick off of the 8th Annual SFJAZZ Spring Season. March sets the stage for this four-month long celebration, with appearances by some of the most acclaimed names in jazz, blues, and world music, including:
Jerry Gonzalez & The Fort Apache Band; Omar Sosa (Palace of Fine Arts Theater, 3/9)
Etta James & The Roots Band (Masonic Auditorium, 3/10)
SFJAZZ Collective (two shows, Herbst Theatre, 3/11)
