SFJAZZ Gala 2007 "Straight, No Chaser"
Dubbed “chic, hot, and hip” by the San Francisco Chronicle [read the article], the SFJAZZ Gala is an annual fundraiser for our organization’s educational and artistic programs.

The festive event, which takes place February 23 at the Four Seasons Hotel, features a surplus of fine food and drink, high spirits, lavish auction packages, and stunning company.
It is also the only place to catch the SFJAZZ Collective—DownBeat’s 2006 “#1 Rising Star Jazz Group”—debuting selections from their 2007 repertoire, including new compositions and the music of Thelonious Monk. “The Collective makes music that moves you intellectually and spiritually,” Gala co-chair Robert Mailer Anderson (an honor he shares with his wife Nicola Miner) noted in the February issue of 7x7 Magazine. “They’re not archiving what jazz was, but creating what jazz is.”

In honor of what would have been Monk’s 90th-birthday year, this year’s Gala is themed “Straight, No Chaser” for Monk’s signature tune. It is part of the Spring Season-long Monk Project, a series of concerts, educational events, and Members-only events paying tribute to the legacy of this jazz icon.
Another band appearing onstage at the gala, and sure to cut their teeth on some of Monk’s tunes, is the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars. In addition to enjoying the music, SFJAZZ Gala-goers can take pride that their contributions to the future of jazz are paying handsome dividends.
