Even for a musician of Ornette Coleman's stature, 2007 has been an exceptional year. In addition to receiving a Lifetime Grammy Award, the legendary alto saxophonist and composer was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize. He joins a large group of Festival artists honored at the Jazz Journalists Association’s recent Jazz Awards. Discover Jazz: The Blues
The Discover Jazz class dives into the colorful mythology and history of jazz, swinging right into the music’s key figures, recordings, forms, and ideas. Each class hits upon essential concepts that, when taken as a complete series, give any fan the ability to hear between the lines of great jazz performances. This month SFJAZZ Director of Education and working jazz bassist Cory Combs talks about discovering the blues (the topic of this fall's first "Discover Jazz" class) as a youth in Wichita, Kansas. The eighth annual SFJAZZ Spring Season was a four-month long celebration of music, featuring 30+ events across San Francisco, including the innovative Monk Project, concerts by Dave Brubeck, Etta James, McCoy Tyner, Joshua Redman, the SFJAZZ Collective and many, many more. The 12th Annual San Francisco Silent Film Festival runs this weekend, July 13-15, at the Castro Theatre. This three-day event showcases a diverse selection of archival silent films with live musical accompaniment.
The festival includes cinematic gems starring silent film icons Louise Brooks, Rudolph Valentino, and Wallace Beery and films directed by such greats as William Wellman, Hal Roach, Georges Méliès, and Cecil B. DeMille. All programs feature era-appropriate live accompaniment performed by internationally regarded musicians. And back by popular demand, we will present a free-admission program with a behind-the-sceens look at the fascinating world of silent film preservation.
