BEn ratliff
launches new book with sfjazz
“Ben Ratliff's measured intelligence and readable, elegant prose…earn him a place among the best critics we have." —Phillip Lopate
Ben Ratliff, one of jazz music’s most respected and widely read critics, will celebrate the release of his long-awaited book, Coltrane: The Story of a Sound, at an exclusive SFJAZZ Members' Listening Party tomorrow, Tuesday, September 18, at one of San Francisco’s classic venues, the Great American Music Hall. This will be a rare opportunity to hear the esteemed New York Times writer discuss the development and influence of John Coltrane throughout 50 years of jazz. Don’t miss this chance to meet and ask questions of Ratliff, and pick up a signed first edition of this authoritative new book, based on extensive research and profound insight into Coltrane's music.
“Ratliff is such a terrific writer that he can make musical points clear even to readers who know nothing about theory. This book will be passed from hand to hand." —Luc Sante on Coltrane: The Story of a Sound
This Members' Listening Party is free to all SFJAZZ Members (2 tickets per membership), and includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages courtesy of Kendall-Jackson and North Coast Brewery. There will also be a cash bar for cocktails. Copies of Coltrane: The Story of a Sound will be available for purchase at the event, and Ratliff has graciously agreed to autograph copies for SFJAZZ Members.
Doors open at 5:30, event starts at 6:00. Login now to reserve your tickets online, or pick up your tickets at the door the night of the event.
