JOHN McLAUGHLIN "PLUGS IN" FOR FEST PREVIEW CONCERT

John McLaughlin’s guitar exploded into the late ‘60s jazz world. His recordings with Miles Davis (In a Silent Way, Bitches Brew) and Tony Willams’ Lifetime (Emergency!) were landmarks in the early jazz-rock era. (On hearing Lifetime, Herbie Hancock said, “It was exciting and very arresting. It snatched you. It yanked you out of your seat.”) McLaughlin brings that same incendiary electric guitar virtuosity to the Masonic Center September 22 in a special 25th Anniversary San Francisco Jazz Festival preview concert. A workshop band unlike any other in jazz, the SFJAZZ Collective recently returned from their first European summer festival tour, released a new double-CD set, and are already looking forward to 2008 with a new lineup featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano and vibraphonist Stefon Harris. SFJAZZ High school All-Star On THE RISE

The first jazz concert Ben Flocks experienced was a performance by Joshua Redman’s Elastic Band in Flocks’ hometown of Santa Cruz, CA. At the time Flocks, a student at Pacific Collegiate School, was still getting his feet wet with the saxophone, and says he didn’t even know what jazz was. “Once I heard [Redman], I knew that jazz was my music.” Read article


 // IN MEMORIAM - MAX ROACH (1924-2007)

Max RoachLegendary jazz drummer Max Roach passed away on August 15 at the age of 83. The New York Times obitiuary notes, Roach "rewrote the rules of drumming in the 1940’s and spent the rest of his career breaking musical barriers and defying listeners’ expectations." Roach was also a longtime civil rights activist whose music often reflected his work towards racial equality. Read the complete obituary
