// IN MEMORIAM - CARLOS "PATATO" VALDES (1926-2007)

Legendary conguero Carlos "Patato" Valdes, passed away Tuesday, December 4 at the age of 81. The New York Times obituary calls Valdes "a giant of Latin jazz in Cuba and then for more than half a century in America."

Toumani Diabate, performing January 26, 2008 at the Herbst Theatre, is an acclaimed maestro of the kora, a harp unique to Africa.

How many strings does a kora have?
