John Santos & The SFJAZZ High School All-Stars
This fall, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars will make their annual debut with one of the most exciting and unique concerts in the program’s history. SFJAZZ has commissioned Bay Area Latin jazz legend John Santos and arranger John Calloway to create an extended composition exclusively for the All-Stars. The result, Traditions in Transition, combines multiple musical traditions in a bold, rhythmic, and dynamic five-movement suite.
“Traditions in Transition…illustrates several seemingly
divergent elements of American music and history to tell a very American story,” said Santos. “Forced migration, colonial mentality, untold hardship, and the celebration of human dignity and spirit are at the core of the story. The common denominator is Jazz—not just the music, but jazz as an attitude and a movement unto itself.”
By far one of the more challenging works the group has performed, Traditions has also changed the makeup of the band, adding a full Latin percussion section. With intense solos, and intricate ensemble playing, Traditions in Transition is testament to Santos and Calloway’s unique musical vision and the talent and dedication of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars.
Also, be sure to check out the All-Stars upcoming performance on Friday, November 16 for the Embarcadero Center building lighting ceremony, which takes place in Justin Herman Plaza.
