This SFJAZZ Podcast features excerpts from a Pre-Concert Talk with jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran and drummer and founder of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, T.S. Monk. Led by SFJAZZ Director of Education Cory Combs, the conversation took place on May 19, 2007, prior to Moran and Monk’s reinterpretation of Thelonious Monk’s famed Town Hall Concert.
Both T.S. Monk and Jason Moran return this fall to the San Francisco Jazz Festival in concerts that pay tribute to what would have been Thelonious Monk’s 90th Birthday Year. Monk brings his acclaimed sextet on a double bill with the Bay Area’s own Monk’s Music Trio. And Moran gives the West Coast debut of “In My Mind: Thelonious Monk at Town Hall, 1959,” a multimedia tribute featuring archival video and audio footage, co-commissioned by SFJAZZ and Duke University.
Moran will also appear at a master class presented in conjunction with the Jazzschool in Berkeley. Moran will cover both his unique approaches to composing and improvising as well as playing piano in both solo and group formats.
