The Ninth Annual SFJAZZ Spring Season kicks off March 6, but SFJAZZ Members get a head start on over four months of music with a number of Members-only events and discounts: the Listening Party celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the bossa nova with Brazilian guitarist Oscar Castro-Neves; a special invitation to the SFJAZZ Collective Informance, part of the Spring Season's Shorter Project; and discounted admission for the Discover Jazz: Tenor Sax course and the SFJAZZ Collective's March 15 performance at U.C. Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall. Join SFJAZZ today to show your support of great music programming in San Francisco, and to enjoy all these exciting events.

OSCAR CASTRO-NEVES FEATURED GUEST AT MEMBERS LISTENING PARTY, MARCH 4

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the bossa nova, Brazilian guitar legend Oscar Castro-Neves joins SFJAZZ Executive and Artistic Director Randall Kline in this fun and enlightening evening exclusively for SFJAZZ Members. Castro-Neves will share his personal experiences and candid insights about the fabled history of bossa nova, leading SFJAZZ Members through a guided listening to classic and rare recordings and archival video footage.

A Closer look

This spring, SFJAZZ pays tribute to “one of the most significant composers and individual saxophonists in jazz” (The New York Times), Wayne Shorter, with a wide-ranging series of concerts and events that display the breadth and depth of his awe-inspiring talent—including a very special appearance by the legend himself, both with his all-star quartet and an expanded nonet featuring famed ensemble Imani Winds (4/11).

The 2008 SFJAZZ Collective

Discover The Tenor SaX THIS SPRING

Running five consecutive Thursdays, February 7–March 6, this season’s all-new Discover Jazz course brings the story of the tenor sax to life with themed classes spanning the swing era through the modern day. Led by SFJAZZ Director of Education Cory Combs, each class features a guest talk and performance by a highly regarded Bay Area tenor player, as well as historic audio and video clips.

SFJAZZ COllective
UPDATE FOR ’08

The SFJAZZ Collective returns this spring with an all-new repertoire, an exciting mix of the works of Wayne Shorter and the Collective’s own all-new original compositions, plus new members Joe Lovano (saxophones), Stefon Harris (vibes), and Robin Eubanks (trombone). In its only Bay Area appearance this year, the ensemble performs at U.C. Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall on March 15, as part of Cal Performances' 2007-2008 season. The group also appears on the heels of its first-ever concert DVD, Live at Jazz à Vienne.
