The music business is a multi-million dollar industry, and yet even those who work within it are often unclear as to how to maximize their talent and build a career. This series is designed for vocalists, musicians, and those interested in seeking strategies and information on how to further their careers, as well as music lovers curious about the inner workings of the business. Experts from varying fields will share their perspectives, knowledge and expertise, and highlight the ongoing changes that are shaping the industry today. Non-musicians will gain an appreciation for the diverse subject matter, while musicians will find ways to leverage their talent by having their questions answered. May be enjoyed as a series or individually.

From the field hollers and work songs of the American South through the era of civil disobedience and into the 21st century, African American music has expressed myriad forms of cultural resistance. In this special series in honor of Black History Month, we will highlight the many secular oral traditions that paved the way for contemporary music in the United States, exploring the lineage of rural forms and their impact on urban life and culture. Join Bay Area vocalist and cultural historian Linda Tillery along with celebrated guest artists for a look at the music behind the movements - from emancipation to civil rights, and from song to spoken word.

Special musical guests for this series include the Cultural Heritage Choir, vocalist Terrie Odabi, pianist Tammy Hall-Hawkins, guitarist/vocalist Alvon Johnson, Deszon Claiborne and Leon Joyce (drums), and many more!

Presented in partnership with the African American Art & Culture Complex

Throughout the history of jazz, women have played a major part in the development and evolution of America’s art form despite facing extreme hardship and discrimination as well as an undeniable lack of advocacy among historians and critics. Often toiling away in the background while their male counterparts reveled in the limelight, women instrumentalists, composers and arrangers were seldom acknowledged for their equally prolific and transformative work, needing to fight twice as hard for acceptance among their male counterparts. In this series we will trace the extraordinary accomplishments of America’s blues and jazz women and highlight the shifting paradigm for women in contemporary society.
