J Dillalude! Glasper and company breath life into the work of J Dilla and many other Hip-Hop legends. Young as I am, the hip-hop rhythm, perhaps more generally its sound, speaks more directly to my generation than the timeless swing beat.

Most people enjoy the traditional Cuban music--son aka Buena Vista and Co. When I visited Cuba, I discovered rumba, afro-cuban music. This is a rich and raw music tradition. Pedrito came up with Afro-Cuba De Mantanzas. He's pouring his youthful energy and creativity into my favorite Cuban music tradition--la rumba!

I really dig what many call the Nordic sound, or perhaps vibe. Tord plays so melodically, with such space, all modal and harmonically open. I only wish we were presenting more Scandinavian groups--they can play!

I've been in to Masekela ever since I saw him front a Miriam Makeba (his former wife) tribute group at the 2012 Cape Town International Jazz Festival. What a party! He still has a great sound on trumpet too. But his music goes such much farther! South African music kills me.

She's back! I caught her at the SFJAZZ Festival this past summer and was blown away. Her taste, phrasing, vocal inflections, and lyrical embellishments are just too damn fresh!
