For a second consecutive year, SFJAZZ in partnership with Stanford Live will present an exciting series of outdoor concerts at the historic Frost Amphitheater during the month of July as a part of the Stanford Live Arts Festival. The line-up includes a tribute celebration of legendary singer Linda Ronstadt, GRAMMY-winning bassist, vocalist, and composer Esperanza Spalding, and a double bill featuring multi-generational Cuban greats in Arturo Sandoval and Pedrito Martinez (subbing for Eddie Palmieri). 

On September 13, SFJAZZ and Stanford Live will partner again to present Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis at Frost Amphitheater.

Bassist, vocalist, and composer esperanza spalding is a spellbinding talent whose soulful sound has captivated a vast international audience. The first jazz artist to win the GRAMMY for Best New Artist, she has been a collaborator with jazz giants including Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner and has made an indelible mark as a bandleader, releasing eight chart-topping albums including Chamber Music Society, Radio Music Society, Emily's D+Evolution, 12 Little Spells, and her most recent 2021 release, Songwrights Apothecary Lab. For this performance, she will revisit highlights from her momentous career with a superb band.

Eddie Palmieri is under doctor's orders not to travel, and therefore will be unable to perform on this double bill concert. He will be replaced by Cuban percussion superstar Pedrito Martinez. Ticket refunds are available upon request, and will be handled by the Stanford Live Box Office

This evening brings two Latin jazz legends together for an unforgettable double bill. GRAMMY-winning trumpet virtuoso Arturo Sandoval helped revolutionize Cuban music with the influential band Irakere. He’s recorded over 30 albums and worked with artists including Tito Puente, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. In 2013 he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in recognition of his lifetime of cultural contributions.

Cuban conguero Pedrito Martinez, who’s played an essential role infusing Afro-Cuban currents into American music since settling in New York City in 1998, has recorded and performed with artists such as Wynton Marsalis, Paul Simon, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Issac Delgado, and Gonzalo Rubalcaba. The 21st century rumba king has is rooted in the percussion-driven Afro-Cuban rumba tradition, sacred batá rhythms, and Yoruba chants of Santería.
