Associate Director of Marketing, Public Relations
SUMMARY
The SFJAZZ Associate Director, Public Relations is a member of the Marketing team and directly reports to the Director of Marketing. This important role generates robust media coverage and promotional activities locally, nationally, and internationally for SFJAZZ in-person and digital concerts and content, SFJAZZ Education programs and events, SFJAZZ Collective recordings and tours, SFJAZZ Gala, fundraising initiatives, and all PR activities for organizational including milestones, staffing and Board of Trustee updates, and crisis management strategies.
ABOUT SFJAZZ
SFJAZZ is one of the world’s most popular and important presenters of jazz. The SFJAZZ Center is a beautiful and perfect stage for jazz artists and the community to celebrate the living American art form of jazz. The $64 million dollar Center launched in 2013 and the 38-year-old non-profit organization now delivers distinguished programming and education services from the heart of the San Francisco arts district. The pre-pandemic budget for the organization was over $19 million; 60% derived from ticket sales.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Proactively pitch media to support SFJAZZ concerts, education programs, digital initiatives, and other organizational efforts
- Create and distribute comprehensive and informative SFJAZZ Press Releases for concert announcements, education programs, and special events
- Work directly with artists, managers, and booking agents for each show to maximize press coverage
- Schedule interviews with artists and SFJAZZ staff with key media outlets locally, nationally, and internationally to secure previews, reviews, and features
- Ensure media outlets are equipped with appropriate assets and information for all SFJAZZ programming
- Provide and implement communication and PR strategies on marketing initiatives including concerts, digital initiatives, education programs, SFJAZZ Collective activities, and fundraising activities
- Submit calendar listings on regional music-related and media websites for all concerts, education programs, and special events
- Develop and distribute media alerts as needed
- Identify and distribute promotional marketing materials to Bay Area community organizations, consulates, and active affinity groups
- Coordinate SFJAZZ Gala media outreach for event coverage
- Organize and distribute press comp tickets and communications
- Arrange press tours and familiarity events with media, journalist, and community organizations
- Develop international publicity campaigns to support the SFJAZZ Collective tour dates and album releases
- Organize interviews for Collective members with international, national and local press
- Create talking points for the Board of Trustees, Directors, and staff members on highly sensitive public facing topics
- Work collaboratively and professionally within the Marketing team and within the organization at large
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
- Strong experience in public relations, media, and marketing
- Great understanding of regional and national arts and music-related media outlets and journalists
- Ability to implement PR communication strategies and campaigns
- Strong experience in setting up media and press interviews, creating press releases, and distributing media alerts
- Good knowledge in jazz and jazz-related music
- Experience in non-profit performing arts and live concert promotion
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills
- Persistent, resourceful, and motivated self-starter
- Highly organized and able to thrive in fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment
- Community outreach experience, a plus
