Kneebody Saxophonist Series: Ben Wendel Group

Ben Wendel Group

Called “Perhaps the best and most well-known saxophonists consistently active on both coasts” by the L.A. Weekly, Wendel gained notice as a founding member of the prolific and pervasively influential jazz-and-beyond band Kneebody, but the Santa Monica-raised multi-reedist has also carved out a significant body of work as a bandleader in his own right as well as memorable sideman work with Antonio Sánchez, Taylor Eigsti, and Prince. A composer given to intricate constructions carefully tailored to the musical personalities of his collaborators, he makes his California debut as a leader with an all-star quartet that should provide no end of inspiration for his writing. A scion of a talent-laden jazz family, pianist Gerald Clayton has earned renown as the leader of one of jazz’s most celebrated trios. When he’s not performing with Clayton, Dayna Stephens, Taylor Eigsti, or a bevy of other stellar contemporaries, bassist Joe Sanders leads his own band Infinity. And Puerto Rican drummer Henry Cole has distinguished himself as a dynamic catalyst on a series of seminal Afro-Caribbean jazz albums by the likes of SFJAZZ Collective members Miguel Zenón, David Sánchez, and Edward Simon. The formidable ensemble debuts on Wendel’s new Motéma album What We Bring. This is future-tense jazz.
