Family Matinee: Christian McBride | SFJAZZ
Family Matinee: Christian McBride
We are thrilled to welcome one of jazz music’s most prolific and generous advocates, educators and artists: bassist, bandleader and Resident Artistic Director Christian McBride! A master of resourcefulness, McBride turned lemons into lemonade following an abrupt change in personnel for a festival appearance, and put together a last-minute ad-hoc ensemble of musicians from the festival who had never worked together, not to mention that they hadn’t prepared anything for their appearance in front of several thousand concert-goers! The result was a wildly eclectic night of street beats and soul-drenched improvisation that has now developed a life of its own as the Christian McBride Situation. For his Family Concert, the dynamic bassist and bandleader will show us exactly WHY improvisation and fearlessness are such critical components in jazz. Join us with your entire family as we kick off our fifth season at the SFJAZZ Center with Grammy-winning artist Christian McBride!
Join us following the performance for a thrilling interactive workshop in Orff percussion with music educator Doug Goodkin and Friends! Workshops take place in the Joe Henderson Lab immediately following the matinee performance, and are free to concert ticket-holders. Sign-ups take place in the lobby prior to the concert and space is limited.
