A towering figure in contemporary music, GRAMMY-winning pianist Brad Mehldau revisits his most ambitious project, Highway Rider. This groundbreaking work has only been performed four times since the release of Mehldau’s 2011 Nonesuch recording, and this will be the first and possibly only time the music will be performed in the Bay Area. Produced by composer Jon Brion (Paul Thomas Anderson's Magnolia and Punch-Drunk Love, as well as Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), the recording was described by the BBC as "Mehldau’s epic or saga-like statement... a concept album with an odyssey-like subtext." For these performances, the suite will feature an incredible all-star lineup that includes saxophonist Joshua Redman, bassist Larry Grenadier, drummers Jeff Ballard and Mark Guiliana, augmented by a 31-piece orchestra made up of alumni of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Based around the concept of a journey, the piece contains some of Mehldau’s most evocative writing, and was characterized by the composer this way: "Highway Rider is influenced by a bunch of music – a bunch of classical scores I’ve lived with for a while, jazz performances and pop songs." The Los Angeles Times summed up Highway Rider aptly, saying "Full of unexpected twists and lush, evocative detours, Highway Rider is most definitely a trip, and one well worth taking."
