John Scofield & Jon Cleary

Longtime friends who started hanging out years before they first came together on stage, jazz guitar wizard John Scofield and funky New Orleans pianist/vocalist Jon Cleary might seem like unusual musical partners. But they’ve forged a deep musical bond over their shared love of Crescent City R&B, creating music that’s low down, irresistibly grooving and deliriously pleasurable. A 2016 GRAMMY winner for his newest album Go Go Juice, the British-born Cleary moved to New Orleans as a teenager, absorbing the sounds of the city’s idiosyncratic keyboard professors firsthand and gaining national attention touring and recording with Bonnie Raitt. He had never heard Sco’s music when they met back in 1991, but mutual regard off stage eventually led to a soul communion on the bandstand via their shared love of Crescent City masters like Professor Longhair, Johnny “Guitar” Watson and Little Willie John. One of the contemporary jazz scene’s definitive jazz guitarists, Scofield has displayed a chameleonic talent for turning any musical setting into a forum for his unmistakably slinky lines, whether he’s playing post-bop, funk/fusion, nu-groove, or country music. Cleary’s New Orleans pianism played a central role on Scofield’s 2009 album Piety Street, a gospel-fueled celebration of blues and funk, and they’ve honed a soul-steeped program of duo music since then.
