Alicia Olatuja

Hailed by Dianne Reeves as one of the most exciting young jazz singers on the scene, Alicia Olatjua possesses a sumptuously rich mezzo-soprano and preternatural poise. The St. Louis native was reared on gospel, soul and jazz and earned a Masters in classical voice and opera at Manhattan School of Music. She first gained national attention as a featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at Barack Obama’s 2013 presidential inauguration ceremony. But in the past two years she’s created a powerful buzz in jazz circles through her work with GRAMMY Award-winning pianist/arranger Billy Childs, who’s featured her alongside vocalist Becca Stevens on the extended tour of Map to the Treasure: Reimagining Laura Nyro. She’s also entranced legendary Hammond B-3 organist Dr. Lonnie Smith, performing with him at high profile events like the Charlie Parker Festival and the BRIC JazzFest. Increasingly visible as a bandleader in her own right, Olatuja makes her Bay Area debut under own name with a stellar quintet featuring Los Angeles pianist Josh Nelson, an ace accompanist who’s performed and recorded with singers such as Natalie Cole, Sheila Jordan, Sara Gazarek, and Kurt Elling.
