Y La Bamba

Portland-based Y La Bamba mixes folkloric traditions and contemporary indie pop sounds in a hybrid that could accurately be termed “Nuevo Latino,” led by the magnetic young vocalist Luz Elena Mendoza. Born in San Francisco and exposed to the music of her Mexican heritage through her parents and the lasting influence of visits to family in the San Joaquin Valley, Mendoza had a deeply spiritual experience during a trip to India that informed her uniquely inclusive worldview and musical signature. She started the band upon moving to Oregon in the early 2000s, building a devoted following and releasing a self-distributed debut before recording 2010’s breakout release Lupon, produced by Chris Funk of indie darlings The Decemberists. Momentum built quickly, with the band touring extensively and recording new albums in 2012 and 2013 while Mendoza also found time to collaborate with the likes of Edna Vazquez and Lila Downs on new projects. Y La Bamba’s newest record, Ojos Del Sol, is a sweeping statement of purpose, full of songs both tender and exploratory, as befitting a young visionary who has gained wisdom through hardships and perseverance.
