Chris Potter Quartet/ Melissa Aldana | SFJAZZ
Chris Potter Quartet/ Melissa Aldana
Two of jazz’s most prominent saxophonists, each at the forefront of creativity and acclaim, lead their latest projects on this superlative double bill.
Winner of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Saxophone Competition, 28-year-old Melissa Aldana seemed to materialize out of nowhere, but her captivating sound and bold vision have been nurtured by some of jazz’s most perspicacious talent scouts including Danilo Perez, Greg Osby, George Coleman, and her father, renowned Chilean saxophonist Marcos Aldana. A headlining artist at 16, Aldana released two quartet sessions prior to her Monk Competition win, and her breakthrough release, 2014’s Melissa Aldana & Crash Trio, was a critical triumph. Her newest album, Back Home, features her current trio. For this performance, Aldana will be performing with her quartet.
DownBeat magazine called Chris Potter “one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet,” and it’s easy to understand why. A restless explorer, Potter began his musical journey in the late 1980s, laying the foundation for his current position as a leading light in jazz in which he has shared the studio and bandstand with a staggering list of major artists including Pat Metheny, Paul Motian, Dave Holland, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Steely Dan and the Mingus Big Band. Showing a singular focus and growth as a composer and improvisor, Potter has moved deftly from acoustic post-bop to the fringes of experimentalism, and he returns following a triumphant performance with his Underground Orchestra in Season 3 with an exciting new quartet project.
