Donny McCaslin Quartet / Antonio Sanchez Migration

A double bill of artists defining modern jazz in the 21st Century, both with direct ties to major milestones in pop culture.
GRAMMY-winning drummer Antonio Sánchez is best known for his drum-based score to the 2015 Best Picture Oscar winner Birdman and his work with guitarist Pat Metheny, with whom he has toured and recorded since 2000. He performs with his explosive Migration quartet in support of their latest CAM Jazz release, The Meridian Suite. One of the instrument’s modern masters, Sánchez is a musician possessing a rare combination of astonishing technique, soulful groove, and a deeply melodic sensibility – traits that carry over to his skills as a composer and the remarkable new long-form work found on The Meridian Suite.
Santa Cruz-raised, GRAMMY-nominated saxophonist Donny McCaslin is a relentlessly exploratory musician who fully embraces the influences of modern electronic dance music and bebop in equal measure. Like Sánchez, McCaslin came through the band of vibraphone giant Gary Burton and rose to prominence working with Steps Ahead and Maria Schneider as well as his string of 11 adventurous releases as a leader. It was through Schneider that McCaslin came to the attention of the late pop icon David Bowie, who employed the saxophonist and his quartet to be the band featured on his final statement of artistic genius, 2016’s Blackstar. McCaslin’s new Motéma Music album, Beyond Now, is dedicated to and inspired by Bowie.
