Linda May Han Oh Group
An artist who has earned accolades around the jazz world including a #1 Acoustic Bass Rising Star nod from DownBeat magazine’s Critics Poll, Malaysia-born bassist and composer Linda May Han Oh is one of the most important young voices in jazz today – best known to SFJAZZ audiences for her appearances with jazz giant Pat Metheny’s all-star quartet to start Season 5 and as part of piano virtuoso Fabian Almazan’s trio during 2016 Summer Sessions. Raised in Perth, Oh began on bass at 15 and demonstrated a remarkable level of facility as a teenager, graduating with honors from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts and earning a Masters from the Manhattan School of Music. She has racked up a stunning résumé since then, working with Vijay Iyer, Kenny Barron, Geri Allen, Joe Lovano, Terri Lyne Carrington, and fellow Jazz Festival performer Ambrose Akinmusire before completing the latest ensemble fronted by guitarist Pat Metheny – a monstrous quartet that includes pianist Gwylim Simcock and drummer Antonio Sánchez. Oh’s career as a bandleader got off to an auspicious start with 2010’s Entry, featuring Akinmusire and SFJAZZ Collective drummer Obed Calvaire, and expanded with her follow-up Initial Here, an expansive release that draws upon Oh’s cultural identity. Her most recent session, Sun Pictures, employs an adventurous and exploratory piano-less quartet including Kneebody saxophonist Ben Wendel, guitarist James Muller, and drummer Ted Poor.
