Fourplay

The all-star contemporary jazz quartet of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Chuck Loeb, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason celebrate their 25th Anniversary and the release of their new album, Silver. The genesis of Fourplay traces back to 1990, when James enlisted Mason, East, and original guitarist Lee Ritenour to perform on his acclaimed Grand Piano Canyon session, and the chemistry was so strong they continued as a working quartet, releasing their eponymous debut the following year – a million seller that topped Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Album chart for 33 straight weeks. Bob James came to prominence as house keyboardist and arranger for Creed Taylor’s seminal soul-jazz label CTI in the 1970s before making a name as a solo artist, collaborating with David Sanborn and Earl Klugh, and writing a string of hits including “Angela,” a song immortalized as the theme from the iconic TV comedy Taxi. One of the most recorded bassists in history, Nathan East has lent his masterful playing to work with artists ranging from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Herbie Hancock and electronic music megastars Daft Punk, whose GRAMMY-winning track “Get Lucky” has East’s deeply funky bass as its foundation. Harvey Mason is a vaunted studio veteran with long ties to CTI, the Brecker Brothers and Chick Corea, among others. His signature touch on Herbie Hancock’s “Chameleon” and George Benson’s “On Broadway” are, by themselves, the stuff of music history. The band’s newest member, Chuck Loeb, brings a lifetime of musical mastery as a collaborator with Stan Getz and Steps Ahead, releasing 19 albums as a leader since the late 1980s.
