Gaucho

Made up of musicians associated with the Hot Club of San Francisco, Tom Waits, and Tin Hat, Gaucho is a masterful Bay Area gypsy jazz sextet that combines the influence of Django Reinhardt with ragtime, New Orleans swing and gutbucket blues. Led by eminent guitarist and Hot Club of San Francisco veteran Dave Ricketts, the group has been a San Francisco mainstay for nearly 15 years. Accordionist Rob Reich is best known as a member of avant-chamber ensemble Tin Hat and the Nice Guy Trio, and Ralph Carney has lent his multi-wind mastery to numerous recordings and performances with Tom Waits as well as work with Elvis Costello, the B-52s, and the Black Keys. Guitarist Craig Ventresco established himself as a virtuoso of ragtime and Delta blues as a member of the ragtime revival band Bo Grumpus, and made integral contributions to the soundtracks of Terry Zwigoff films Crumb and Ghost World. Together with the superlative bassist Ari Munkres and versatile drummer and percussionist Steve Apple, Gaucho transports listeners back in time. Blending instrumental acuity and lighthearted humor, they take the French gypsy tradition straight back to the gutbucket, creating a uniquely American concoction.
