About Charles Bradley

A decade ago, Charles Bradley was a struggling soul singer who impersonated James Brown in little clubs in Brooklyn, where he’d spend his teenage years living on the street and sleeping in subway cars. Then Gabriel Roth, co-owner of the soul music-revival label Daptone, happened to catch Bradley’s act. Hit by the gritty power of the man’s voice, Roth signed and recorded him. In 2011, at the age 62, Bradley released his first album, No Time for Dreaming, a set of original songs born of hard knocks and sung with a passionate intensity that made people sit up and listen. The hit record brought the singer to national attention. Bradley, whose sound recalls Otis Redding, began performing for ecstatic crowds at major music events across the country, from South By Southwest, to San Francisco’s Outside Lands festival, garnering kudos and coverage from Rolling Stone and other publications. Last year, the man who calls himself “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” released his second CD, Victim of Love. This is his much-anticipated SFJAZZ debut.
