SFJAZZ Family Matinee with Tiffany Austin and Marcus Shelby

SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón introduces SFJAZZ's Family Matinee Rebroadcast program, premiering this Sunday at 11am (PT) on sfjazz.org.

Over a year into the pandemic, and we are all gleefully anticipating the return to “normal” family activity. But what to do in the meantime? Tune in with the entire family on Sunday, May 9th this Mother’s Day for the premiere of our Family Matinee Rebroadcast program, of course! SFJAZZ will broadcast these performances on the second Sunday of each month (at 11am PT) in order to bring you closer to the music while supporting artists during this challenging time. We are thrilled to share some of our most treasured moments performed live at the SFJAZZ Center, and to kick things off, we celebrate The Power of the Voice with extraordinary vocalist Tiffany Austin and her stellar line-up featuring Tammy L. Hall (piano), Marcus Shelby (bass), and Leon Joyce Dr. (drums).

Those of you who have joined us for these highly engaging matinees know what a joy it is to share and make music with the entire family. Beyond the exquisite musical presentations, these concerts provide our young audience members with a deeper, more interactive experience. And for a few budding “jazz cats,” this often includes an opportunity to join the performers on stage, as you will see for our first concert in this virtual series. What better way to highlight the joy of participating in these shows than get to know one of our special SFJAZZ families. I recently spent some time with the Lamm family revisiting some of their treasured moments at the Center. Marshall is our wonderful Publicist, and Allison previously worked in our Development department and now serves as Director of Annual Fund and Communications at the Saint Francis Foundation.

Can you recall the first SFJAZZ Family Matinee you came to as a young family?

The first matinee we attended was on March 24, 2018 with Pamela Rose & "The Blues is a Woman" program.

How old was your daughter for the first one, and what were her impressions or reactions?

She was 9 months old and I remember she sat still and was focused on the music for the entire performance. It helped that the music was so fun and engaging and Pamela and the band kept it very interactive and interesting.

We know how busy working families with young children can be! What are some of your go-to, family-friendly activities in the Bay Area?

We are frequent visitors to the SF Botanical Gardens, the Academy of Sciences, and we picnic often in GG Park. Most weekends, we go playground-hopping from one neighborhood to another with stops for food and naps in between (!).

What are you most looking forward to doing as a family once we resume anything resembling normal?

Going to concerts, dance performances, out for meals, and to visit our extended families!

Be sure to sign up for digital membership and tune in Sunday, May 9th, 11am PT for our first Family Matinee Broadcast with Tiffany Austin!
