During her 40-year career, SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Terri Lyne Carrington has established herself as one of the most respected and in-demand drummers in jazz. Just ask Herbie Hancock. Or Wayne Shorter. Or Esperanza Spalding. Or the National Endowment for the Arts, which awarded her the title of NEA Jazz Master in 2021. Carrington keeps evolving: She is increasingly busy as a composer, educator, bandleader, and producer — and as an advocate for gender equality in jazz.
On both Saturday and Sunday, Feb 25-26, Carrington presents a powerful adaptation to a large-scale multimedia suite, Seen/Unseen: Explorations, Interrogations and Resilience. The original full-piece, It Must Be Now! debuted in May 2022 and was commissioned by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Presented in four parts, this groundbreaking work seeks to address racial and social injustices that face Black women throughout their life. The concert will feature improvised visuals from internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist Mickalene Thomas, an all-star cast of musicians, a wind ensemble featuring students from the SF Conservatory of Music, and dancing from Babatunji Johnson (of Alonzo King LINES Ballet).
The master drummer is a musical bridge builder, bandleader and activist. Over a 40-year career, she has collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Nancy Wilson, David Murray, Dianne Reeves, Stan Getz, Dianne Reeves, Esperanza Spalding and countless others. A champion of gender rights in jazz, she is the only woman ever to win a GRAMMY for best jazz instrumental album.
Carrington presents a powerful adaptation to a large-scale multimedia suite, Seen/Unseen: Explorations, Interrogations and Resilience, commenting on the journey of Black women featuring live visuals by internationally renowned artist Mickalene Thomas.
