Playlist: African Diaspora
February 4, 2021 | by SFJAZZ
As an organization that celebrates an artform born from and rooted in the African-American experience, we believe we should be honoring Black history every day.
One of the many ways we will highlight this history in the month of February is through four curated playlists celebrating the music’s African roots, the important role jazz has played in calling out racial injustices, the invaluable contributions made by Black female artists, and today's groundbreaking Black vocalists.
We kick things off this week exploring the African Diaspora and how the continent's rich musical traditions have helped shape jazz. Highlights include Pharoah Sanders, Randy Weston, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Horace Tapscott, Nubya Garcia, Nduduzo Makhathini, Angel Bat Dawid & more!
