Who were these powerhouse jazz women who defied the odds and stood shoulder to shoulder with their male counterparts, giving the world their awe-inspiring artistry? When will the playing field finally be leveled in this historically male-dominated field? Why do we need to highlight the accomplishments of women in jazz? Until we no longer have to ask these questions! For our Women’s History Month series, SFJAZZ will honor some of the most influential, talented and groundbreaking artists to shape the jazz landscape.

In class 1 we honor the lasting legacy of pianist, singer-songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone. Known for openly addressing the racial inequality that surrounded her as well as drawing from her African-American origins, Simone challenged society’s non-violent approach to social change while cultivating a powerful and moving repertoire. Pianist and educator Tammy Hall guides us through Simone’s indelible imprint on jazz and American folk music, and shares the heart-wrenching story of this pioneering artist. In class 2 Hall returns to celebrate the extraordinary pianistic gifts of Trinidadian-born jazz and classical pianist and vocalist Hazel Scott, the first woman of color to have her own television show in the United States. Bay Area pianist and educator Laura Klein joins us for class 3 as we honor the many gifts of pianist, composer, educator, radio host and 2000 NEA Jazz Master Marian McPartland, a fierce advocate for equity in jazz. And rounding out our series in honor of Women’s History Month, we look at some of the unsung heroines and female instrumentalists in jazz by highlighting the life and work of tenor saxophonist and educator Vi Redd. Joining us for the final class is celebrated saxophonist Tia Fuller, whose tenure with Beyoncé has propelled the gifted player and educator to explore worlds beyond her focus on jazz pedagogy.

Miles Davis recorded with the vision of continually changing the world of music - a lofty ideal that he met with stunning success decade after decade. Each new record had purpose, and was intended to be considered in its entirety, from the first track to the last. For this Discover Jazz series, we are going to focus on four exemplary Miles Davis recordings from his incredible discography, considering the recordings as they were meant to be considered - as complete and dynamic works of art created by a visionary like no other.

Trumpeter, composer/arranger and SFJAZZ Collective member Sean Jones joins us for class 1, highlighting the new direction in jazz marked by the 1957 release of Birth of the Cool. Joining us for class 2, pianist and SFJAZZ Collective member Ed Simon shares the indelible contributions of long-time Miles collaborator and pianist Bill Evans, whose rich harmonic palette and delicate touch easily complemented the Miles aesthetic on the all-time best-selling jazz album, Kind of Blue. In class 3 we highlight Davis’ exploration of modal jazz as well as the hints of the jazz-rock movement on the horizon. Tenor saxophonist Teodross Avery joins us for a look at the 1967 release Miles Smiles, known as much for its sophisticated rhythmical and harmonic textures as for the stellar lineup, considered by many to be one of the greatest quintets in jazz. And finally, we celebrate the remarkably creative Davis recording Bitches Brew, highlighting the jazz-rock sensibilities of what would be later known as “fusion.” Featuring trumpeter Bill Ortiz (Santana) and guitarist Dave MacNab, we will explore the collaborative nature of Miles’ work with John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland, and the many others who participated on this seminal 1970 recording.
