Wednesday, January 18, 2017 | SFJAZZ Center

The pre-eminent classical tabla virtuoso of our time, Zakir Hussain is an international phenomenon in the field of percussion and in the music world at large. He is one of the world’s most esteemed and influential musicians and widely considered a chief architect of the contemporary world music movement.

AFTERJAM

SFJAZZ extends its heartfelt condolences to Sharon Jones’s family, friends, and the Dap-Kings. As one of the most talented and inspiring soul singers of our time, we are deeply saddened by her passing.

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings helped celebrate the opening of the SFJAZZ Center in 2013 performing as the headliner for our AfterJam concert. On January 18, 2017, SFJAZZ will celebrate its Fifth Anniversary Season with a Gala honoring tabla master Zakir Hussain. Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings were scheduled to return to SFJAZZ to headline the AfterJam once again and help celebrate this milestone.

We will make an announcement regarding the AfterJam schedule on www.sfjazz.org/gala and contact Gala supporters as information becomes available.

During these concerts students and teachers:

Season 5 (2016-17) School Day Concerts

Marcus Shelby Orchestra
Sounds of Freedom
Wednesday February 8, 2017
10-11AM & 1:30-2:30PM

Marcus Shelby

In honor of Black History Month, SFJAZZ presents a thrilling look at the rich tapestry of songs from the Underground Railroad, presented by award winning bassist and bandleader Marcus Shelby. Many spirituals, as well as other forms of music during the era leading up to Emancipation, contained secret codes that helped enslaved African Americans seek their freedom. Activist and freedom fighter Harriet Tubman not only carved her place in American history, she and others used music as a strong vehicle of communication, and it is these songs that we celebrate for this special interactive program.
