Having first gained attention for her takes on Swing Era standards, Lizz Wright has emerged as a singular singer/songwriter steeped in soul, folk music, and gospel. She’s recorded six albums for Verve and Concord including 2017’s masterful album Grace and contributed to a pair of GRAMMY-winning releases, Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters and Terri Lyne Carrington’s The Mosaic Project. She has been an invaluable collaborator with a range of artists including Danilo Perez, José James, Toots Thielemans, Kendrick Scott, and Meshell Ndegeocello, and will be joining the SFJAZZ Collective for the 2021-22 season devoted to the music of Joni Mitchell.
For this performance, originally recorded in September 2019 and streamed in April 2020 on Fridays at Five, Wright brings a cross-section of spiritually charged songs with a superb band.
