During the month of July, SFJAZZ and Stanford Live will co-present two exciting concerts as a part of the Stanford Live Arts Festival. The line-up includes the legendary Count Basie Orchestra at Bing Concert Hall, and a massive outdoor blues concert at Frost Amphitheater featuring Taj Mahal Quintet, and a duo performance featuring Elvin Bishop and Charlie Musselwhite.

Count Basie Orchestra

In the history of jazz music, there is only one bandleader that has the distinction of having his orchestra still performing sold out concerts all over the world, with members personally chosen by him, for over 30 years after his passing. Pianist and bandleader William James “Count” Basie was and still is an American institution that personifies the grandeur and excellence of Jazz. The Count Basie Orchestra, today directed by Scotty Barnhart, has won every respected jazz poll in the world at least once, won 18 Grammy Awards, performed for Kings, Queens, and other world Royalty, appeared in several movies, television shows, at every major jazz festival and major concert hall in the world.

With a 50+ year career, three Grammy wins, 14 nominations, Blues Hall of Fame membership, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, Taj Mahal’s impact on the blues is undeniable. For more than 40 years, Mahal, internationally renowned bassist Bill Rich, and revered percussionist Kester Smith have taken blues on a joyride through reggae, funk, jazz, cajun, and more, leaving a trail of swinging hips and raised palms in their wake. In 2019, guitarist and lap steel master Bobby Ingano joined the group, and the trio became the Taj Mahal Quartet. Opening the show will be a special duo performance featuring two living icons of the blues, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elvin Bishop and Blues Hall of Famer Charlie Musselwhite

Jorge Drexler is an internationally acclaimed, multifaceted artist. He is the first Uruguayan musician to win an Academy Award (for his song “Al otro lado del río” featured in the movie The Motorcycle Diaries), and he has received 13 Latin Grammy Awards. Like both of his parents, he studied medicine and became a practicing doctor. He also had a passion for music, having taken piano, guitar, and composition lessons from the age of five. At age 30, he made the decision to leave medicine and become a full-time musician. He has collaborated with Caetano Veloso, Natalia Laforcade, Shakira, Mercedes Sosa, Julieta Venegas, and Joaquín Sabina, among many others.

Barcelona-born composer, pianist, and singer Meritxell Neddermann will open up the show, performing music from her debut recording Backyard of the Castle and new selections from her forthcoming sophomore album. Raised in an environment of musicians and trained by the best Catalan and American music schools, rhythm and melodies run through Neddermann veins, blending together classical music, jazz, funk and indie rock while experimenting with loops, pedals and a vocoder. During 2022, the she accompanied Jorge Drexler's international tour, playing piano with his band. Meanwhile, she has also toured in LATAM and Germany.
