Described by JazzTimes as “a revelation,” the breathtaking young pianist and winner of the 2014 Montreux Jazz Piano Solo Competition matches astonishing technique with deep feeling and a mastery of the Afro-Cuban, modern jazz, and classical traditions.
Classically trained in both piano and percussion, Pacheco has already built a lifetime of major milestones in his growing career. In addition to his Montreaux win, the Havana native won Cuba’s prestigious International Contest for Young Jazz Musicians (JoJazz Festival) in 2007 and the 2013 Best Jazz Project Award, and was listed among the other rising stars in Vanity Fair’s article “The Jazz Youth-Quake."
Pacheco sold out his solo piano debut at Lincoln Center in 2015, and has performed in various settings around the world, from Snug Harbor to the Kennedy Center. As a composer, Pacheco premiered his A Symphony for Jazz Quartet and Symphonic Orchestra at the National Theater of Cuba in 2018.
Pacheco has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis, Arturo O’Farrill, Lenny White, Issac Delgado, Miguel Zenón, and Dave Weckl, and has released a trio of accomplished albums including his latest, the 2022 Ropeadope trio session The Lockdown Album. He makes his SFJAZZ debut during the same week as his sister, acclaimed pianist Marialy Pacheco, who performs on July 14.
