Original show description below.
Albanian-born cellist Rubin Kodheli has made a career as a restless creator, working alternately in rock, modern classical, and jazz settings with artists including Dave Douglas, Henry Threadgill, Meredith Monk, and Tom Harrell. He brings his trio based in improvisation featuring bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Brian Chase, performing the freewheeling, ecstatic music from their new self-released album Departure.
Kodheli is well known for his ongoing collaboration with performance art icon and former SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Laurie Anderson, performing with her in early 2020 in a duo setting and in a trio with bassist Christian McBride. Kodehli is also known to SFJAZZ audiences for his appearances with clarinetist and former Resident Artistic Director Anat Cohen’s Tentet project.
Trevor Dunn is among the busiest and most respected artists straddling worlds of jazz, experimental rock, and contemporary classical music. He gained fame as bassist with the wildly inventive rock band Mr. Bungle along with work as a leader and as collaborator with John Zorn, Mary Halvorson, and Fantômas.
Drummer Brian Chase is widely known as a member of the indie rock giants Yeah Yeah Yeahs and is deeply versed in New York’s experimental jazz scene. He was ranked in Gigwise’s list of Greatest Drummers of All Time.
The cellist and composer performs in a trio with bassist Trevor Dunn (John Zorn, Mr. Bungle) and drummer Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs).
