Anyone worried about the state of the blues need only experience Shemekia Copeland to know that the tradition is in very good hands. She debuts at SFJAZZ with music from across her expansive career including material from her latest Alligator Records release Done Come Too Far.
Daughter of the late great Texas guitarist Johnny Copeland and one of the most creative voices defining the blues today, she’s earned a string of honors since releasing her stellar 1998 Alligator debut Turn Up the Heat.
Steeped in the Chicago tradition but inspired by a wide array of currents in American music, she’s a trenchant songwriter who addresses tribulations both personal and social in her music. Jazz fans have taken note. Voted “Rising Star - Blues Artist” in DownBeat’s 2009 critics poll, Copeland was recognized again in the magazine’s 2022 critics poll as “Blues Artist of the Year.”
All five albums she’s released in the past decade have been nominated for GRAMMYs, Blues Music Awards and album of the year by Living Blues Magazine. At 44, Copeland is an artist in full flight, delivering a potent dose of the truth with each performance.
