Join us for this exclusive matinee screening of director Dorsay Alavi’s exciting new documentary film Zero Gravity, tracing the life and music of the late genius Wayne Shorter.
Over a decade in the making, Zero Gravity is constructed in three parts, corresponding to three major periods in the saxophonist and composer’s momentous life. The film takes us from his upbringing and professional start with Art Blakey and Miles Davis and his emergence as a leader from the 50s to the early 70s, to his electric jazz period in the 1970s and 80s with Weather Report and his struggles with commercial success, to his life as an elder statesman in the 2000s when he led the greatest working quartet in jazz and expanded his creative pursuits further than ever before.
Zero Gravity combines archival footage and recent interviews with Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Ron Carter, Terence Blanchard, Marcus Miller, Carlos Santana, and other artists to create a vivid portrait of the 1998 NEA Jazz Master and 2008 SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award honoree who passed at 89 in March of 2023.
Prior to the screening, SFJAZZ Executive Artistic Director Terence Blanchard will discuss the documentary on stage with the film's director, Dorsay Alavi. Beginning at 1:15pm, members of the award-winning SFJAZZ High School All-Stars will be performing music of Wayne Shorter in the SFJAZZ Center lobby.
