Original show description below.
Over the years the Disney songbook has attracted the attention of some extraordinary jazz artists, including Sun Ra, Dave Brubeck and Louis Armstrong. Marking the centennial of Walt Disney launching his eponymous animation studio, “When You Wish Upon a Star” infuses the Disney canon with a fresh jolt of jazz energy.
Performed by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s newly created house quintet led by pianist Sean Mason, the show features two vocalists with deep Bay Area ties. Kim Nalley is a San Francisco institution and longtime SFJAZZ favorite who can scat with the dexterity of a bebop horn player, belt the blues with downhome authority, and caress a ballad with imploring tenderness.
New York-based Sasha Dobson is part of an illustrious Bay Area jazz clan that includes her late father, the beloved pianist Smith Dobson, her mother, vocalist and educator Gail Dobson, and younger brother, drummer, and saxophonist Smith Dobson V. She’s carved out her own niche in the Big Apple as a jazz-steeped singer/songwriter and guitarist who plays and records her own material and is sought out as a collaborator on projects like the trio Puss N’ Boots (with Catherine Popper and Norah Jones).
Nalley and Dobson’s contrasting sounds offer a wide-angle take on beloved songs from Disney classics from Snow White, Lady and the Tramp and Mary Poppins to The Jungle Book and Toy Story.
Celebrating 100 years of Disney, “When You Wish Upon a Star” infuses their classic canon with a fresh jolt of jazz energy, featuring pianist Mason and vocalists Nalley and Dobson.
