Original show description below.
Adam Shulman’s final night of residency presents him in the setting most familiar to SFJAZZ patrons, the timeless and endlessly flexible piano trio. Shulman has performed in this setting numerous times on the Miner stage for his performances of Vince Guaraldi’s beloved compositions from the 1965 animated classic A Charlie Brown Christmas, but this evening will be decidedly different. Joined by veteran bassist John Wiitala and drummer Smith Dobson V, the heir to Bay Area jazz’s first family, Shulman presides over an evening of adventurous originals and pieces from the standards songbook.
A creative force on the San Francisco jazz scene for the past two decades, pianist Adam Shulman is a probing improviser and arranger deeply versed in the jazz tradition. He has worked with major league players such as Stefon Harris, Larry Coryell, and Bobby Hutcherson, and recorded four superb albums, including his 2022 all-star sextet release Just the Contrafacts his recent holiday album We Wish You a Funky Christmas. This season, Shulman showcases his versatility with four nights in settings ranging from duo to sextet, performing a mix of timeless standards and his own finely wrought tunes.
Shulman’s final night of residency presents him in the classic piano trio format that many SFJAZZ audiences know from his numerous holiday performances.
Shulman swings hard, exudes confidence and takes chances, while never veering too far off course.
