Original show description below.
Part of a wave of brilliant musicians who’ve made their way to Los Angeles in recent years, Canadian-born drummer and composer Anthony Fung has thrived since graduating from the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (now known as the Hancock Institute of Jazz) in 2018. Born and raised near Toronto, Fung was mentored by piano great Danilo Pérez at Berklee College of Music. After studying and performing with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Chris Potter, and Billy Childs at the Monk Institute, he established himself as a rising bandleader and composer with a series of critically hailed albums.
Whether he’s leading his own combos or collaborating with Bay Area-reared saxophone star Dayna Stephens in the plugged-in quartet Pluto Juice, Fung is a dynamic force with a supple touch. The stellar young quartet he brings to the JHL focuses on music from his acclaimed 2022 album FO(U)RTH and features two fellow Monk Institute alumni, alto saxophonist Alex Hahn and bassist Luca Alemanno (the first Italian musician accepted into the Monk program). Pianist Michael Ragonese, known as an ace accompanist and prolific LA studio player, featured Alemanno and Fung on his critically hailed debut album Day to Day, highlighting the close ties shared by these players.
Renowned for collaborations with Danilo Pérez and Cyrille Aimée, drummer and composer Fung presents music from his latest album FO(U)RTH with saxophonist Alex Hahn and bassist Luca Alemanno.
