An artist representing the enduring and ever-evolving legacy of South African jazz, pianist Bokani Dyer makes his Joe Henderso Lab bow with his superb trio.

Son of the iconic South African saxophonist Steve Dyer, the 38-year-old Botswana-born pianist stands with trombonist Siya Makuzeni, drummer Tumi Mogorosi, and pianist Nduduzo Makhathini as part of the current generation of master South African artists making major waves on the global scene.

Beginning his piano studies at 14, Dyer showed immense promise from a young age and received a SAMRO Scholarship from the Southern African Music Rights Organization at 23, traveling to New York for studies with piano great Jason Moran and releasing his debut album, Mirrors, the following year.

Dyer has issued six albums as a leader and won the 2019 South African Music Award for Best Jazz album in recognition of his self-released trio session Neo Native featuring bassist Romy Brauteseth and drummer Sphelelo Mazibuko.

His sixth and latest album, 2023’s Radio Sechaba, is an artistic triumph featuring his father Steve Dyer on saxophone and is his debut for tastemaker Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings.
