FEB 13-16 | Valentine's Week
Feb 15 - Feb 16, 2025
Joe Henderson Lab
Think of Camille Thurman as a one-woman jazz festival. A commanding tenor saxophonist, master flutist, and powerhouse vocalist, she’s a polymorphously gifted artist who has emerged over the past decade as one of the most exciting young artists on the New York scene. With a rich, velvety tenor tone reminiscent of Gene Ammons, Thurman brings the same rhythmic agility and improvisational finesse to her epic scat solos. She debuts during Valentine’s week with a mix of jazz classics and more.
She started collecting awards as a composer and player in her teenage years and made a powerful impression with her 2013 debut album Origins featuring heavyweight collaborators Luis Perdomo (piano), Rudy Royston (drums), Corcoran Holt (bass), and Brandee Younger (harp). It was the same year that Thurman placed behind Jazzmeia Horn at the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, and she’s been soaring ever since. From 2018-2020 she toured internationally with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, holding down the tenor sax chair as the first female musician to join the band full-time. She continues to sub with the orchestra but has been focusing in recent years on leading the Camille Thurman Quartet featuring Oakland-reared drummer Darrell Green.
“Clear articulation, natural vibrato, soulful inflection and remarkable, Ella Fitzgerald-esque scat prowess” (DownBeat)
