Co-leading “a quartet with a singularly spacious sound” (The Oaklandside), vocalist Amy D and vibraphonist Dillon Vado bring their Heart Matter project to the Joe Henderson Lab. Amy D is known to SFJAZZ audiences for her pair of Hotplate tribute concerts devoted to the music of the great Sarah Vaughan.
Heart Matter makes direct eye contact with the human experience.
Co-led by vocalist Amy D and vibraphonist Dillon Vado, the two composers share a kinship and collaborative spirit; weaving emotionally chromatic journeys through song. Vibraphone, electric bass, and drums form the group’s signature sonic palette, setting a potent foundation for powerful, timeless vocals.
The pair, joined by drummer Isaac Schwartz and bassist Lukas Vesely, premiered their new material at San Jose’s Art Boutiki Music Hall in 2023.
Their original music combines the improvisatory ethos of jazz and the intentionality of chamber music, presenting an innovative take on the singer-songwriter paradigm.
The lyrical depth of Heart Matter speaks to fans of Joni Mitchell and Becca Stevens, while the virtuosic arranging and execution echoes Steely Dan, Esperanza Spalding, and The Bad Plus.
More than anything, Heart Matter seeks to share transformative music with those who need to hear it, offering a remedy for the trance of modern life and a sacred space to feel it all.
