Original show description below.
A visionary flutist, bandleader, and composer, Jamie Baum brings her working quartet to SFJAZZ for the first time.
A perennial DownBeat and JazzTimes Critics’ Poll winner, Baum has brought her virtuosic playing on concert and alto flutes to collaboration with Roy Hargrove, Paul Motian, Anthony Braxton, Randy Brecker, and Kenny Barron.
She’s a 2014 Guggenheim Fellow and former student of the legendary Jaki Byard whose half-dozen albums as leader pair her with a remarkable set of supporting musicans to bring her exploratory compositions to vibrant life – works that strike an endlessly provocative balance between modern classical and angular 21st century jazz. Her recent recordings document a blending of South Asian, Near Eastern, and sacred Jewish traditions, and her newest Sunnyside release, 2024’s What Times Are These, is the fifth with her expanded ensemble. The album contains a new set of compositions borne of the pandemic lockdown that set the words of eminent 20th and 21st century women poets. What Times Are These features trumpeter Jonathan Finlayson, guitarist Brad Shepik, and vocalist Theo Bleckmann, among others.
Baum’s quartet focuses on the traditional jazz format of wind instrument with rhythm section and performs music ranging from her arrangements of both classic and modern jazz tunes to her originals specifically for this setting.
Performing with her quartet, the award-winning flutist Jamie Baum “creates a world where sonic and spiritual resonance rest on an even plane.” (JazzTimes)
