Original show description below.
“A fine pianist who is a particularly inventive arranger-composer" (DownBeat), the Madrid-born Marta Sánchez closes this year’s Thelonious Monk birthday celebration with decidedly adventurous takes on Monk’s music in a sublime trio with bassist Chris Tordini and Oakland-raised drummer Savannah Harris.
First pursuing classical piano studies in Spain before making jazz her focus, Sánchez quickly rose through the Madrid jazz scene, touring the country with her Zafari Project band and representing Spain at jazz festivals all over the world. Her remarkable technique balanced with a soulful flair and a restless spirit of exploration earned the young artist several grants, awards, and other accolades including a Fullbright Scholarship that brought her to the U.S. for the first time.
Since moving to New York in the 2010s, Sánchez has gone from strength to strength, working with a succession of superlative musicians and forming her quartet devoted to her original compositions, releasing her debut album Partenika in 2015 – a recording that made The New York Times’s list of top 10 jazz albums of the year. She is currently a member of avant-garde saxophone legend David Murray’s vaunted quartet.
Her latest for Intakt Records, 2024’s Perpetual Void, is her debut with the trio of Tordini (Tyshawn Sorey, Chris Speed) and Harris (Cécile McLorin Salvant, Christian McBride).
