Original show description below.
Marin-raised, L.A.-based alto saxophonist and composer Nicole McCabe plays original compositions from her latest album, Mosaic, with her superlative quartet.
McCabe is part of the creative ferment that has energized the Los Angeles jazz scene in recent years, and in many ways her music has been shaped by the people and environment that define the West Coast.
She started gaining national attention with her 2020 debut album Introducing Nicole McCabe, which features a rhythm section including piano great George Colligan.
Moving to L.A. for graduate work at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, she studied with Vince Mendoza, Patrice Rushen, and Russell Ferrante and recently completed Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead residency at the Kennedy Center, where she studied under Jason Moran.
Featuring her first LA quartet, including her partner Logan Kane on bass, McCabe’s second album, Landscapes, is a sweepingly melodic project inspired by picturesque drives up and down the West Coast.
For her JHL debut she’s performing from her new album Mosaic with a stellar quartet including former SFJAZZ High School All-Star Kane and drummer Mark Ferber, both East Bay natives, and George Colligan, who has recorded with jazz legends such as Jack DeJohnette, Lee Konitz, and Buster Williams.
