Founded in 2004, the SFJAZZ Collective is our all-star resident ensemble and composer’s workshop that represents what’s happening now in jazz. The group includes music director and tenor saxophonist Chris Potter, tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter Mike Rodriguez, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Brewer, and drummer Kendrick Scott.

The band has expanded beyond its original mission to embrace other influences outside of jazz history, and this year, the Collective embarks on the most audacious project in their history.

For the 2024-25 Season, each member of the SFJAZZ Collective will be composing a new work inspired by The de Young Museum's About Place collection featuring 42 works by more than 30 Bay Area artists. About Place is from 2022 Svane Family Foundation gift and will be on display at the museum from August 10, 2024 – September 28, 2025.

The exhibition explores how artists relate to their environments through place: place as the physical land, place as heritage, place as the imaginary, and place as belonging. Some of the specific subject's touch on topics like climate change, immigration, LGBTQ+ movement, California droughts and fires, and more.

Each selected art piece will also be creatively displayed visually using the auditorium's immersive projection system throughout the performance.

Please join us for this scintillating journey of sight and sound!

The septet will collaborate with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco to compose new material inspired by The de Young Museum's About Place collection featuring 42 works by more than 30 Bay Area artists.
