"Stanley Clarke is an icon who has revolutionized bass playing. He opened up my brain to an electric form of jazz while I was in school."
ABOUT THIS SHOW
Virtuoso bassist, composer, and 2022 NEA Jazz Master Stanley Clarke is a peerless innovator and a five-time GRAMMY winner who brought new prominence to the electric bass in jazz and was a primary developer of jazz fusion as a founding member of the iconic band Return to Forever with the late Chick Corea.
For the final night of his residency, Clarke celebrates the music he made with Return to Forever along with original compositions written for his N 4EVER band including saxophonist Emilio Modeste, keyboardist Jaharis Stampley, and drummer Jeremiah Collier.
A Philadelphia native, Clarke began bass studies in his youth, and moved to New York in 1971 after graduating from the Philadelphia College of the Performing Arts, making his first recording with trombonist Curtis Fuller and working with the likes of Stan Getz, At Blakey, Joe Henderson, and Pharoah Sanders, among others.
Formed in 1972, Return to Forever was one of the greatest fusion bands of the 1970s, releasing seven studio albums that have become classics including Light as a Feather, Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy, and Romantic Warrior.
The bassist has recorded 24 albums as a leader, leading a procession of masterful bands, and collaborating with George Duke, McCoy Tyner, Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Al Di Meola, Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Stewart Copeland, and dozens more.
Among Stanley Clarke’s claims to fame is his pioneering work with pianist Chick Corea in the 1970s fusion supergroup Return to Forever that made him a major jazz star. He celebrates this music along with original compositions written for his explosive N 4EVER band.
