Awarded the prestigious Julliard Career Advancement Grant by Wynton Marsalis and a featured performer on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, Washington DC-born Cameroonian-American vocalist Ekep Nkwelle is among the most acclaimed young artists in jazz.
Forging her path through the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, the Juilliard School, and Howard University, where she performed with the renowned Afro Blue jazz vocal ensemble, Nkwelle has already built an impressive list of collaborators including Russell Malone, Cyrus Chestnut, and Emmet Cohen, and recently worked with the legendary Dee Dee Bridgewater as part of her exclusive, all-women artistic residency, The Woodshed Network.
With a rare combination of power, soulfulness, and emotional truth, Nkwelle has graced stages around the country, from the Kennedy Center and DC’s Blues Alley to Radio City Music Hall, Newport Jazz Festival, and Lincoln Center, where she has been celebrated as a rising star.
Nkwelle makes her San Francisco debut with these performances in the Joe Henderson Lab, where you will have a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime performer that All About Jazz celebrates for “delivering timeless messages to audiences with power and confidence.”
The superb vocalist and Julliard Grant recipient has worked with Dee Dee Bridgewater and Cyrus Chestnut.
