Cameron Carpenter w/ International Touring Organ

Feb 08 - Feb 11
Miner Auditorium

Lauded by the Los Angeles Times as “one of the rare musicians who changes the game of his instrument,” Cameron Carpenter has done so much more than merely ruffle the feathers of the organ’s stodgy establishment – the 33-year-old virtuoso has taken a sledgehammer to organ conventions while forcing the cloistered organ world to acknowledge his iconoclastic vision. He returns with his revolutionary International Touring Organ, performing music from his latest Sony Classical album, All You Need is Bach, devoted to the work of J.S. Bach, as well as selections of Bernstein, Scriabin, Louis Vierne, Joplin and his unique improvisations.

With the introduction of his groundbreaking digital International Touring Organ, he is solely responsible for the first significant advance in his instrument’s development in over a century. Winner of the prestigious Bernstein Award (Schleswig-Holstein), Carpenter has devoted himself to expanding the organ’s frontiers in terms of repertoire as well. Through his numerous transcriptions of non-organ works, collaborations with jazz and pop musicians, and his ambitious original compositions, he ventures into uncharted territory. He tops it off with bravura showmanship, presiding over the instrument with all four limbs in furious motion. Following the smash success of his Sony Classical debut If You Could Read My Mind and its wildly divergent set of classical and re-imagined pop compositions, Carpenter returns with All You Need is Bach, a program of J.S. Bach organ and clavier music featuring several of the Baroque originator’s greatest works for keyboard, including the Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Organ Sonatas in D minor and E-flat major, and Contrapunctus IX from The Art of Fugue. Carpenter’s four-night run marks the return of his custom-built International Touring Organ, a one-of-a-kind electronic instrument and elaborate speaker system that, like its owner, brings the centuries-old pipe organ tradition firmly into the 21st century.
